The Synergistic Benefits
When you combine clinical somatic movement and Pilates, you get a powerful combination that addresses the root cause of chronic tension and poor movement patterns.
Re-educating the Nervous System: Clinical somatic movements directly target the ingrained muscle patterns that cause tension. By teaching your nervous system new, healthier ways to contract and release, you are essentially "rewriting" old, dysfunctional motor habits.
Reinforcing New Patterns: Pilates then provides a framework to reinforce these new, healthier patterns. With a nervous system that is better regulated and muscles that can fully release, you can perform Pilates exercises with greater efficiency, control, and freedom.
Releasing Ingrained Tension: Over time, this combined approach allows your body to "shed" the old tension that has built up over a lifetime of stress and poor posture. This creates space for a more upright, balanced posture and greater ease of movement.
Holistic Freedom: The result is not just a stronger body, but a more resilient and regulated nervous system. You gain deeper self-awareness and control, leading to greater freedom of movement and a sense of ease in your daily life.
Pilates and Nervous System Regulation
Pilates is well-known for its emphasis on core strength, controlled movements, and breath. The mind-body connection is central to the practice. This mindful, intentional approach is what makes Pilates so effective for nervous system regulation.
Here's how Pilates helps to calm the nervous system:
Mind-Body Connection: Pilates encourages you to be present and aware of your body's movements, sensations, and breath. This focus on the internal experience helps to shift your nervous system from a "fight-or-flight" (sympathetic) state to a "rest-and-digest" (parasympathetic) state.
Breathwork: Pilates uses specific breathing patterns that can help to slow the heart rate, reduce stress hormones like cortisol, and promote a sense of calm.
Proprioception: The controlled, precise movements in Pilates enhance proprioception—your body's awareness of its position in space. This improves motor control and can help your nervous system feel safer and more secure.

“Being a Pilates instructors I find Clinical Somatics is an ideal addition to my teaching technique, because the intention of Pilates and CSE are quite similar: to address underlying imbalances in body use by retraining learned patterns; to elongate muscles, relieve pain, and improve posture and overall physical function; and to improve internal awareness of the body. Yet, Pilates can be too intense for people who are starting out with a great deal of pain and tension. The extremely slow, gentle, tension-releasing technique of pandiculation is a highly effective way to help these clients get out of pain and be able to practice Pilates safely.”
